Suspended KASU Lecturer allegedly Flees Nigeria as Kaduna Lawyers, Others Fault Govt Action
Kaduna Lawyers, under the guise of Netzit Patriotic Front, Young Nigerian Christian League and Southern Kaduna Lawyers, yesterday queried the rationale behind the suspension of the Dr. John Danfulani, a lecturer with Kaduna State University (KASU), over an invitation for interrogation by Kaduna State Police Commissioner. The lecturer is alleged to be on the run.
The group, mostly indigenes of Southern Kaduna, in a press conference Tuesday, described the suspension as ‘immoral and intrusion on privacy and liberty of the citizenry through the machinery of the state, authority or the power that be.’
Tagged, “Manhunt for Dr. John Danfulani,” the press conference addressed by chairman of the Front, George Makeri, at Kaduna Catholic Social Center, said they noted with dismay that the suspension of the lecturer with the Political Science Department of the university on 8th January, 2016, to give him enough time to honour the invitation of the police commissioner over a purported Social Media Update written by him was a gross manipulation of state power against the right of commoners.
The chairman stated that, earlier, Dr. Danfulani was queried based on a Social Media Update allegedly written by the doctor, titled, “Our Problem in Nigeria.” He said the authority, in the letter of query, demanded Danfulani to justify why punitive measures would not be taken against him within 48 hours for his action.
However, when it was observed that the query lacked merit and specification of the offends committed, the embattled lecturer faulted the university authority for not getting their facts straight in his reply – a situation, which earned him a suspension in a letter signed by the Deputy Registrar, Mrs. Talatu A. Kuri, of the University.
KASU, according to the League Chairman, concluded that the doctor’s Social Media Update, on his personal Facebook wall, has the potentials of causing acrimony among students and staff in the institution.
On their part, the group (Front) resolved that, Dr. Danfulani, who hails from Southern Kaduna, has been kept under the “surveillance by the powers that be in a Gestapo style ever after he anchored CEDRA on a 100 Days Assessment of governance at both state and federal level” of the current administration.
Netzit Patriotic Front also expressed displeasure that the style of using Danfulani’s “place of work and source of livelihood to hunt and track him down is a dangerous precedent employed by this government in stifling opposition voices.”
“How can his Social Media Update in his personal capacity as an individual cause rancor in school when this was not the first time he was making such statement. From Gov. Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa to Ramalan Yero, the doctor has been consistent,” they said.
Dr. Danfulani, the group added, was instrumental in making PDP government unpopular in the state and championed the breathe of this new government, but was not hunted during those times.
They averred that the doctor’s invitation by the CP was an eye-opener and had “exposed the hand behind KASU’s terrorism of a staff.”
The League, therefore, accused the university of being cajoled into becoming a tool in the hand of government for suppression of people holding different opinions from that of government.”
