‘Pure’ and Bottled Water Boom Days are Numbered in Kaduna – Commissioner Assures
Determined to provide safe and quality drinking water, Kaduna State Government has embarked on total cleaning and turnaround of Pre-Settlement Tank at Kaduna State Water Works, Malali, assuring that when completed, residents may no longer patronise ‘pure’ and bottled water anymore.
Commissioner, Ministry of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Aliyu Lere, who made the revelation after inspection of the work yesterday, said the cleaning exercise is supposed to be carried out at least two times in a year, but was abandoned.
“There was total neglect of cleaning of Pre-Settlement Tank by the previous government. The cleaning of mud from the tank is supposed to be done two times in a year, minimum, or three times maximum, but was neglected. The thorough one was done for the last time in 2008 – about 8 years ago,” he lamented.
According to the commissioner, “When the cleaning and treatment of the three Water Basins are completed in April, Kaduna township residents will decide by themselves whether to stop or to continue to patronise ‘pure water’ or even bottled water.”
He said some, apart of Kaduna town, may experience poor water supply as a result of the contract being executed through direct-labour due to the essentiality and urgency required, but assured that it would provide safe and quality drinkable water, and improve revenue when completed.
Also speaking, the SA to the commissioner on technical matters, Alh Balarabe P., who corroborated his boss’ assurance, said, flow of water speed, taste as a result of chlorine, and regularity of supply would improve substantially at the end of work.
