Plateau By-Election: PDP Rejects Pankshin South Results
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it would not accept the result of the by-election of Pankshin South Constituency of Plateau.
The State chairman of the PDP, Raymond Dabo, who spoke to newsmen in Jos, described the by-election as a “sham” and “unacceptable to PDP.”
According to him, “The results of the entire by-election held in Pankshin were not acceptable to us in PDP especially that of Pyabor polling unit in Chip electoral ward of Pankshin South Constituency.”
He said, “Could you imagine that we, the party officials, including the candidate, were not allowed access to the polling unit, while voting was taking place? This is strange.”
The chairman said, “This kind of action is unhealthy for democracy but very, very dangerous.”
According to him, the party would soon convene a meeting for them to take a decision on what to do to challenge the result of Pankshin South.
Our reporter recalled that the Court of Appeal in Jos had in its judgment on April 11 ordered INEC to conduct fresh elections (into the Plateau House of Assembly) in Nyelleng polling unit of Fier ward in Pankshin North and Pyabor polling unit in Chip ward, respectively, to determine the winners.
Pharm Gideon Dashe of APC had scored 9,985 votes against Istifanus Mwansat’s 9,875 of PDP in the keenly contested election.
The by-election at Pyabor polling unit of Chip electoral ward was held amidst tight security but not devoid of little skirmishes just when the result was to be announced by INEC officials.
It took the combined team of security operatives to control the party loyalists, who disagreed on where the result should be announced. While some insisted that it had to be taken to the council secretariat to be announced, others said it must be announced at the ward level.
It took the declaration by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Godwin Kwanga, before nerves were calmed, and the result was announced almost at dawn.
The Returning Officer for Pankshin South, Dr Chris Vande of University of Jos, declared the result at Longkat in Chip Electoral Ward.
The party had also lost the House of Assembly seat for Pankshin North to APC, whose candidate, Mrs Alice Dimlong, beat Mr Diket Plang of the PDP with 17,3329 votes against Diket’s 16,817 at Nyelleng Polling Unit.
