Members of the Plateau State House of Assembly have rejected a six months’ extension for the Local Government Management Committee Chairmen as requested by Governor Lalong.
The State Assembly, which commenced sitting at about 12 noon on Wednesday, rejected the request during a plenary session shortly before the presentation of the 2016 budget by the state governor, at the State House complex.
According to the Plateau state House of Assembly speaker, Peter Azi, who read the letter to the members for the request, the governor had asked for the extension to enable the state government set in motion modalities for the next LGA elections in the state.
Soon after reading of the letter, the PDP minority leader, Daniel Dem, representing Jos South, argued that the six months’ extension contradicted the agreement made in the flour of the House, which said for whatever circumstances, “only two months” would be added to the management committee chairmen and not six months as demanded by the governor.
In this regard, the APC majority leader in the House, Henry Hynkop, representing Shendam, seconded the motion for the two months’ extension since it was a resolution of the House.
Our correspondent reports that the Management Committee Chairmen who were sworn-in, in October this year, were to vacate office January ending, based on the three months’ initial request by the governor.
