N2.7b LG SURE-P Funds Disappears in Kaduna – PDP Raises Alarm
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Patriotic Front, Kaduna, state Monday raised alarm over the disappearance of a N2.7billion Subsidy Re-Investment Programme (SURE-P) funds belonging to the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.
The Youth also faulted Governor El-Rufai of not keeping to his campaign promises to conduct local government elections in the 23 councils within the first 3 months of his administration for fear defeat.
President of the Youth Front, Comr. Danjuma Bello Sarki, who addressed the press conference at the state party secretariat, said the N2.7billion was part of the amount left behind by the immediate past administration of Kaduna state as SURE-P.
The Front also accused Governor El-Rufai of refusing to release funds from federal allocation to the local governments directly as earlier promised. They also queried the rationale for not remitting 10% of state internally generated revenue to the third-tier also as he pledged.
“The N2.7billion SURE-P funds belonging to the 23 LG Areas left behind by the last administration has disappeared and no one is talking about it. The huge sums of money that has been allocated to the 23 LG Areas of our dear state since inception of APC administration has not translated into any physical development.
“We wish to state categorically clear that the widely publicised so-called LG autonomy granted by Kaduna state government is nothing but a ruse aimed at misleading the public, in order to score cheap political goal by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai,” they said.
The body challenged government to publicly publicise monthly local government by- local government, details of the amount of money that was accrued to the 23 LGs in the last nine months and that of the SURE-P funds as a sign of transparency and accountability.
According to them, by law, if general elections into LG councils could not hold before the expiration of their term, the Kaduna state independent electoral commission requires to prepare a detailed report for consideration and deliberation of the House of Assembly, to advise the governor, if satisfied, to issue order extending the tenure of elected Councils for 90 days to allow for election.
Rather than following the constitution, the commission intentionally refused to issue the 90 days notice of election to conduct general elections into the 12 LG councils in the state, it stated, adding that, “APC government in Kaduna state is terribly afraid of conducting LG council election because the embarrassing defeat that will befall it shall be monumental and disgraceful.”
