Labour Leaders Challenge Gov El-Rufai to Publish Names of Ghost Workers, Others
Kaduna Chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday challenged Kaduna State government to publish names of those ghost workers and those aiding and abetting it in the state and make same available to NLC , TUC Kaduna State Councils for necessary action.
According to the Unions, the colossal amount of involved five hundred million naira (N500,000,000:00) allegedly recovered from the verification exercise per month is big enough to assist the government in its developmental programmes in the state.
The labour unions, which made the appeal in a statement signed by their respective chairmen, Comrade Adamu Ango of NLC and Comrade Shehu Mohammed of TUC , said no amount of campaign of calumny from any quarters would deter the leadership of the unions from demanding for the rights of workers in the state.
It stated that, “Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Kaduna State Chapter, would continue to demand for the rights of workers in the midst of blackmail and intimidation.”
According to the leadership of the two unions, the demand for workers to fill a verification form indicating their choice to belong to a union or not is tantamount to an infringement on their fundamental human rights.
The NLC and TUC maintained that union membership is a constitutional issue, which is above the jurisdiction of any state government, stressing that, “Labour unions would resist any attempt to polarize and create disharmony among its members.” However, it advised workers in the state to remain resolute and be law-abiding, while conducting their duties.
