There was protest in part of Kaduna Tuesday when Department of State Security, DSS, operatives accidentally shot and killed a traveler along Kaduna-Abuja highway. The victim, who was a woman, was said to be inside a boarded commercial vehicle on the way from Abuja to Kaduna with her five children when she was hit by a stray bullet.
The incident actually occurred around Jere Town, but the woman’s corpse was brought to Tall Gate, located at Kakau/Sabon Gayan community, where protest allegedly ensued. An eyewitness said the incident occurred around 2:15 pm – when the DSS operatives opened fire on a suspected vehicle along the highway. Details of who the identity of the person the DSS operatives were after remain sketchy.
“We actually don’t know what really happened, but we only saw the DSS operatives, about 6 of them, arriving in two Hilux vehicles. Immediately they saw a vehicle coming, they tried to stop the driver, but he (driver) refused to stop; so they shot at him.
“But unfortunately, they missed their target, and hit at the commercial vehicle conveying the victim woman and her five children. She died on the spot. This angered motorists that witnessed the incident as they blocked the highway,” an eye witness told our correspondent on phone.
It was further gathered that it took the intervention of a police commissioner to plead with the motorists to pave way for other vehicles plying the highway to pass. The State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Ibrahim, confirmed the incident, saying the DSS suspects have been arrested by the police, as he called for calm. According to him, investigation is already on top gear to ascertain the situation.
