Bias Naming of Public Buildings, Streets & Institutions In Kaduna State
Letter written by Middle-Belt Progressive Movement, to: The Executive Governor of Kaduna State (4th July, 2002) –
Your Excellency, we strongly believe that the slogan of Kaduna as a liberal state was not meant to be a licence for mischief and parochialism. We have observed with profound sadness the bias naming of public buildings, streets and institutions to the unmerited advantage of the Hausa/Fulanis and to the disadvantage of the indigenes and people that have laid down their lives to keep the land in which these anomalies are orchestrated.
To mention but few, institutions and public buildings like Kaduna State Polytechnic, have over night been renamed Nuhu Bammali Polytechnic, Queen of the Apostles has been changed to Queen Amina College; the former famous St. John’s College has sadly been changed to Rimi Colleg; Kaduna Central Market has also been unilaterally changed into Sheik Mahamud Gumi Market. May we also know why a sensitive structure such as the Governor’s House that belongs to the people of Kaduna State and with those monies it was built be amazingly named Sir Kashim Ibrahim House?
There are settlements in different locations of the State that we also noted to have come under such mischief. Streets have been named after Hausa/Fulanis and not the name of the aborigine indigenous chiefs.
Places affected are: Malali, Rigasa, Kabala West, Barnawa, Nasarawa, Sabon Tasha, Kawo, etc. Such streets in GRA like Mohammed Buhari Way, Yahaya Road, Imam Road, Sultan Road, to mention just a few.
As good spirited citizens, your Excellency, we hereby firmly advise that names of indigenous Chiefs, indigenous leaders (past) and prominent indigenes be adopted instead of incisive names.
A Government that does not muster a hidden agenda or is not implementing Chauvinistic Scheme should not be seen to be promoting the afore-mentioned anomalies. Our immediate demands are as follows:
(1) All the streets that do not reflect the names of indigenes of Kaduna State should be renamed to be reflective. Names of big towns like Kagoro, Kwoi and many others, should also be reflected.
(2) We demand that all the names of the prominent chiefs should be used in the naming of public buildings.
(3) Similarly, good spirited citizens of proven integrity who have served the State in various capacities should have their names reflected in honour of their heroic contributions.
